- The South West/Italian Ridge (Lion Ridge) - The North West or Zmutt Ridge - The North Face or Schmid Route. How dangerous is climbing the Matterhorn? Each route has its dangers. You will find long rock climbs with steep snow at altitude and plenty of exposure on all Matterhorn routes. However, Hornli ridge offers a moderately technical ascent and is littered in climbers throughout the summer ...

The Matterhorn was one of the last of the main Alpine mountains to be ascended, not because of its technical difficulty, but because of the fear it inspired in early mountaineers. The Matterhorn has two distinct summits, both situated on a 100 metres (330 ft) long rocky ridge: the Swiss summit with a height of 4,477.5 metres (14,690 ft) on the east and the Italian summit with a height of 4,476.4 metres (14,686 ft) on the west. Their names originated from the first ascents, not for geographic reasons, as both are located on the border.

The Matterhorn is in the central range of the Alps known as the Pennine Alps. From the Swiss side the Matterhorn appears to be an isolated peak, but it is actually the end of a ridge. The Swiss slope is more gradual and easier to climb than the terraced walls of the Italian slope. The Swiss side's Hörnli Ridge was first conquered on July 14, 1865, by the British explorer Edward Whymper ...

Previously, the Italian climber made first solo ascents and forged new routes on mountains such as Cerro Piergiorgio and Cerro San Lorenzo in Patagonia, as well as Mont Blanc in the Alps and Beka Brakai Chhok in Pakistan. However, it is the Matterhorn that holds a special place in his heart. His father introduced him to it, and for generations, his family has been mountain guides in the area.

The Matterhorn accident was one of the deadliest mountaineering catastrophes of the 19th century, sparking a wide debate about mountaineering, masculinity and empire. This engraver from south London had laid siege to the Matterhorn since 1861, climbing on its southern (Italian) ridges by himself or with ...
